Extreme Gold

Extreme Gold--Palomino Jockey Club Thoroughbred Stallion

I wanted a palomino or buckskin Thoroughbred mare, to breed to warmblood stallions in the hopes of getting a fully registered, Main Mare Book or better, Warmblood mare. Like so many people, the golden horses always caught my eye. Even while I was laughing at characters in books who Tamed A Wild Stallion--who was always either palomino (if he wasn't black!)--and who always sired 100% palomino foals (thus showing an enormous lack of understanding equine color genetics!) I still wanted a golden horse. Let's face it--even those of us who don't REALLY care about color, because a good horse is NEVER a bad color--still can't help but have our heads turned when a dark, rich, dappled, golden horse goes by.

And now there are more palomino and buckskin Thoroughbreds than ever before, thanks to people intentionally breeding for these colors. So one would think that it wouldn't be that hard to find one. But I had three problems.

One, I wanted it to have good conformation. I breed for eventing, jumping, dressage. The horse needed to have the physical traits necessary to succeed in these venues.

Two, I wanted the mare to have a decent pedigree. By that I mean I wanted her ancestors to have DONE something. So many of the Thoroughbreds that carried the creme gene were just used for breeding MORE Thoroughbreds with the creme gene, and not having any type of sport career. Many of the golden horses had generations of ancestors that had done NOTHING besides, well, stand around and be Golden.

And three--and this was the killer--I was on a budget. I could find what I wanted, but it was pricey. Apparently other people had noticed the scarcity of performance horses in the golden horse "arena", and were paying a pretty price for the ones with sought after ancestors.

But as luck would have it, I finally found what I wanted. A palomino who was by a stallion that had sired quite a few hunters--Canadian Kid, out of a mare sired by a sire of hunters and jumpers (Siyah Kalem). And there were other great sporthorse names in there--producers of jump and movement--such as Mr. Prospector, Graustark, Buckpasser.

But there were still a couple of problems, new problems. One being that the horse was a stallion. The other was that he wasn't for sale!

It took months of negotiating to make the deal happen, but finally The Golden Stallion(!) came to Airdance Farm in Livermore, CA. And he got a new name: Extreme Gold!

Extreme Gold Pedigree

Extreme Gold has foals coming in 2010 out of these mares:

Nadia xx (Batonnier/Pretense). 17.1 hand mare, earned $36k on track and retired sound. Produced several hunter/jumper offspring when breeding for racing—now she is being bred to a stallion who can jump! Huge step, flat kneed movement, but can really sit and move uphill. Lines include Pretense, Endeavour, Dumpty Humpty, His Majesty (full brother to Graustark). Nadia Pedigree

On The Deck xx (Sword Dance/Blushing John) 16.3 hand mare who earned $40k on track and retired sound. Uphill, great jump. Offspring have great dressage movement (none are old enough to jump yet). Lines include Secretariat, Nijinski, Lisadell (full sister to Thatch), Blushing Groom, Prince John, Graustark, and War Relic. On The Deck Pedigree

Extreme Bling xx (Madraar/Timeless Native) 16.3 hand 3yo mare who will reach 17 hands. Never raced, wonderful mover, built uphill.
