Triple Twist: Thoroughbred Eventing Stallion

The Bonne Nuit Dynasty

Triple Twist is a 12 year old thoroughbred stallion who is one of the few (or the only?) remaining sources of the legendary Bonne Nuit/Good Twist bloodlines—the same that produced the legendary Gem Twist—available in a North American Jockey Club registered Thoroughbred.

Gem Twist, a grey Thoroughbred gelding, was named "Horse of the Year" three times, won two silver medals at the Seoul Olympic Games, and was named "World's Best Horse" at the 1990 World Equestrian Games. GEM TWIST has amassed more than forty career victories with total earnings in excess of $750,000. For openers, he's a great grandson of the immortal foundation sire, Bonne Nuit. GOOD TWIST, sire of GEM TWIST, was a small but unbelievably talented show jumper, so part of the reason GEM TWIST was always ready to win has been due to his heritage. GEM TWISTS's dam, COLDLY NOBLE, a Thoroughbred mare given to the Chapot family had shown moderate success on the race track; her speed augmented GOOD TWIST's athletic jumping ability. GEM TWIST also proved to be fast and athletic enough to carry on his family's winning tradition during the 1980's and 90's.

Good Twist himself was an incredible jumper AND sire of jumpers who won numerous classes in the United States and Europe including the Grand Prix of New York, jumped in Nations Cups and speed classes as well. His grandsire Bonne Nuit, represented USET internationally, and sired the what has become known as the Bonne Nuit Dynasty.

Andreas Haberbeck, in his The Thoroughbred Roots of the Modern Show Jumper, states: “However, that a thoroughbred jumping dynasty can be established was clearly demonstrated by the descendants of Bonne Nuit (1934) by Royal Canopy out of Bonne Cause, by Elf II, one of the great show jumping progenitors of the past. His sons Night Owl (1949) and Riviera Wonder (1950) and his grandson Good Twist (1960) were among the best show jumpers of the 1950s and '60s. Good Twist in turn sired Gem Twist (1979), with whom Greg Best won the individual Silver medal and team Silver at the 1998 Olympics, and who was the best horse in the 1990 World Championship finals. Whether such a bloodline emerges in the future remains to be seen.”

Other famous descendants of this line include Out Late, Night Spree, Riviera Wonder, Circus Rose, Good News Joe and his son Late News, who was recently imported to the UK. Good News Joe jumped in the US to the Grand Prix level. He is out of Jane’s Bit, who competed under the name Tomboy. She won the John Player Trophy, Grand Prixs in Europe and the United States, competed in many National Cups, represented the United States at the Tokyo Olympics (1964), and earned individual and team Gold Medals in the Pan American Games. She is by the well known jumper sire Wait A Bit.

When Last News left the country, a lot of people woke up to the fact that these incredible bloodlines were getting scarcer and scarcer—not just in the USA, but everywhere. So many of the horses of these lines had been competitors and never had the opportunity to pass on their bloodlines. In the UK, however, it was celebration time. From http://www.futuresporthorses.co.uk:

“In my opinion Last News is the best thoroughbred stallion for jumping in the World today" Michael Whitaker

"Being a TB Last News has lots of quality and with his super jump and technique he has to breed top eventers" William Fox-Pitt

"If I was able to compete on this horse he'd certainly be at the Olympics with a chance to win. He is the best horse I've ever jumped" Peter Charles

"Last News is the best thing to happen to Irish Breeding in the last 20 years" Eddie Macken

"Last News is the last of a long line of classic thoroughbreds. His bloodlines are the best available and go right back to the 1960's. His temperament and movement is fantastic and you can only describe his jump as classic." Frank Chapot

And Triple Twist is not only a Good News Joe grandson, and a nephew of Last News, he has more of the Bonne Nuit blood than any horse alive today!
